Vehicle platforms: Design one, build many

A vehicle's platform used to mean a stand-alone frame, which would then have the body bolted to it. Today, "platform" is more of an engineering term for a vehicle's structural design, allowing automakers to turn out a variety of vehicles that look and perform differently but share the basic underpinnings.
