For twenty-seven years, I've been trying to get tickets to see the race in person, and believe me, they're not easy to obtain. But this year, fate smiled upon me, and at the end of this month, two tickets to the second-floor clubhouse should be winging their way to my mailbox. Yesterday, I bought my hat.
Needless to say, I'm almost in disbelief that I'm finally going to go. Through the magic of television, I've seen almost every one of the last 37 races, and thanks to the magic of the mail, I have every program from 1971. I've been to the track three times, but never when a race is running. Now, my first step onto that holy ground on a race day will be for the one that really counts.
