I bought myself a new pen the other day, a limited-edition Montblanc Anniversary Edition 2006. I buy many of my pens by mail order, but I love going in pen shops and meeting the store owners.
My favorite in Toronto is the Ultimate Gift Shop at 1 Queen Street East, owned by a gentleman named Peter Hamburger. Peter is a character, to say the least. One day he told me a story about a sales representative who wanted him to carry a new mechanical pencil.
Peter didn't care for the brand, but the salesman was persistent. That was fine, but then he made the mistake of criticizing the brand that Peter sold. "The pencils you sell don't have erasers on them," he said.
And with that, Peter looked him straight in the eye and said, "My customers don't make mistakes."
