It's somewhat ironic that Cadillac is introducing the ELR, its first electric vehicle, since it was primarily responsible for the demise of battery-powered vehicles in the first place. Find out more in my Toronto Star trivia column!

Cadillac Ciel: Now this is what design is all about

 My knees are weak. Oh, if only they could turn this concept into a production car, I'd sell my soul to buy one.

I helped set a Guinness world record!

I'm in Barton, Vermont - population about 2,750 people and 298 Cadillacs. Those cars were enough to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of Cadillacs in a parade (yes, there really was such a record - 102 cars, set in 2002 in The Netherlands).

I arrived here in a 2011 CTS-V courtesy of General Motors and was number 51 in the historic event. There were cars from 1905 and 1909 right up to 2011, and including cars, SUVs, hearses, a flower car and an ambulance. They came from as far away as Georgia, Quebec, Alaska, New Brunswick, South Carolina and Florida.

Why Barton? It's the birthplace of Henry Leland, who founded Cadillac back in 1902. He left the company in 1917 and started a second one, which he called Lincoln. I wonder if I'll be back some day to drive one of those to set a record!

Why I really love my job ...

This is Alex Xydias, and I met him tonight, thanks to an event at Cadillac's design studio courtesy of General Motors. I'm not much of a car racing fan, but you better believe I know this particular vehicle .. and I certainly know of Mr. Xydias. What an honor to meet him.

And while waiting for my food to be served, I stood and talked a while with Jay Leno ... who also waited in line, no star ego here, for his. But I let him go first. "You go," he said. "No," said I, "you drive a Duesenberg to work, and I only own a Studebaker." So he said that that sounded good, and he went up and ordered his burger. A very classy gentleman, and certainly a night I'll always remember.

Wedding pictures, or a day at a car show?

I was going through some photographs and found this gem. Yes, this is what happens when gearheads get married -- they drive themselves to the wedding. I arrived at the wheel of my red 1947 Cadillac, while he showed up in his pink 1957.

And don't laugh too hard at the dress or the hair. Hey, it was 1987 -- none of us knew any better back then! 

Betcha can't drive just one ...

This is a low-fat potato chip.

It's the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, but it just as easily could be the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, or the Lexus RX400h, or the upcoming hybrid SUVs from Dodge, or full-size hybrid sedans like the Lexus LS600hL or GS450h.

All of them use hybrid systems to improve their fuel mileage and reduce their emissions, and that's a good thing. But all of them have hybrid systems inside very large, very heavy (and, so far, very expensive) vehicles. And I'm betting that the majority will carry one or two people at the most, and maybe the odd bit of cargo that won't come close to the vehicle's capacity.

Hence, the low-fat potato chip, a food-like object that could only be invented in North America: when confronted with the problem of excess weight and poor dietary health, we buy versions that are slightly less bad for us, rather than reach for an apple or even question if we're hungry at all. Likewise, rather than buy a smaller vehicle, or walk more, or combine our trips so we drive less, we buy the large-by-huge SUV with the slightly better propulsion system. All the taste, a bit less fat, and the smug feeling that yes, we're making the planet a better place, one battery-powered gargantua at a time.
